There are extremely steep climbs around Busan, like the grueling last kilometer(s) of 15+ percent average gradient on the Eden Valley, Baenaegol and Big Bastard hills. Each of these climbs offers well-maintained asphalt. Going a bit off the beaten track can be extremely rewarding, although you will have to deal with some rough road surface. On the climb to Ganwoljae you’ll have to conquer some pretty beat up concrete, very steep at times. The steepness, however, never lasts so long that you can not recover. The view on the top is extremely rewarding – maybe the best in the area. In the fall the Ganwoljae pass is famous for its reeds, as far as the eye can see. It’s the highest paved road in Ulsan with 905 meters. The gravel descent into Baenaegol Valley is perfectly rideable on a road bike, but possibly more comfortable on a bike with wider tires.
