You might wonder why to choose Donghae as a far destination on the East Coast, and not Uljin, Gangneung, Sokcho or the DMZ. There is a slow train that leaves once a day from Donghae at 16:00, directly to Sinhaeundae, Centum and Bujeon train station. This will take you more than 7 hours, just slightly longer than the bus. The views from this old train in the early evening are spectacular, as your ride through the green, mountainous Taebaek area (snowy in the winter – possibly even more spectacular). By night, this train passes through the famous Donggun Palace garden in Gyeongju. Dreamlike. It will be an unforgettable train trip, just like the ride to Donghae, which from Pohang follows the quiet East Sea trail. If you’d like to do this route in reverse and enjoy the whole train ride in daylight, the train leaves from the stations of Bujeon, Centum and Sinhaeundae at 9:10, 9:20 and 9:27.
